A new jewelry designer recently shared a frustrating sourcing experience in an online jewelry discussion.
She ordered a custom batch of 316L stainless steel jewelry components with PVD gold plating. Because the products were intended for customers with metal sensitivities, coating durability and nickel-release requirements were important to her.
She specified a minimum coating thickness of 0.5 microns. When the finished batch arrived, however, the gold color was not what she expected. Instead of a warm, rich 18K-style tone, the pieces looked brassy and slightly olive.
The factory may have followed the stated thickness requirement, but the final appearance was still wrong.
Coating thickness and gold color are different specifications
Coating thickness mainly affects coverage, wear resistance and service life. It does not, by itself, guarantee a particular shade of gold. Two pieces can have a similar coating thickness and still look noticeably different.
The final color can be influenced by:
- The coating material and layer construction
- PVD chamber and process settings
- Reactive gas ratios
- Surface polishing before coating
- The color layer underneath the final surface
- Whether a real-gold top layer is used
- The color reference used by the plating factory
This is why one factory's “18K gold color” may not match another factory's version. The labels 14K, 18K and 24K are widely used as commercial shade descriptions, but they are not universal color standards.
First ask what the thickness specification measures
Before placing an order, ask the supplier what the stated coating thickness actually refers to.
A gold-tone PVD finish may contain more than one layer. Depending on the supplier, the quoted measurement could refer to:
- One individual color layer
- A thin real-gold surface layer
- The complete multilayer coating system
- A measurement taken from one selected area
Figures such as 0.03, 0.1 or 0.5 microns are therefore not always directly comparable unless the measured layer is clearly identified.
Thickness may also vary between flat surfaces, curves, edges and recessed areas. For important orders, buyers can request a multi-point XRF coating thickness report. The report should identify the test locations and explain whether the result represents a specific layer or the total coating system.
Do not rely only on the term “18K gold color”
Writing “18K gold color” on a purchase order may not provide enough control. A physical reference sample gives the supplier and plating factory a visible target to match.
When tighter color control is required, the buyer and supplier can agree on:
- An approved physical master sample
- A defined surface finish, such as mirror, brushed or satin
- L*a*b* color measurements
- An acceptable Delta E color tolerance
- Standard lighting conditions for comparison
- A pre-production sample made with the intended production process
The surface finish matters because the same coating can look different on highly polished, brushed or textured stainless steel.
A specially matched gold tone may require additional test runs or a separate process setup. This can increase the sampling cost and may require a higher minimum order quantity, but it is usually safer than discovering a color problem after mass production.
Can a buyer verify the exact coating formula?
A buyer can ask about the coating construction and process, but the supplier or plating factory may not disclose its exact production recipe. More importantly, knowing the formula does not automatically guarantee the final appearance.
Instead of relying only on a formula, buyers should establish measurable acceptance standards:
- Approve a physical master sample.
- Define the required color and surface finish.
- Confirm what the coating thickness refers to.
- Approve a pre-production sample made with the intended process.
- Agree on the thickness, color and quality inspection methods.
- Keep the approved sample for comparison with future production batches.
A note about “nickel-free” stainless steel jewelry
316L stainless steel contains nickel as part of its material composition, so the material should not automatically be described as completely nickel-free.
For jewelry intended for customers with metal sensitivities, the more useful question is whether the finished product meets the applicable nickel-release requirements in the target market.
Brands can request third-party testing of the finished coated product. Testing the final product is more meaningful than relying only on the steel grade or coating description. Nickel-release, restricted substances list and other market requirements should be confirmed before production and included in the purchase specification.
A practical pre-production checklist
- Stainless steel grade
- Approved physical color sample
- Gold-tone description and surface finish
- Coating construction and thickness definition
- Measurement method and test points
- Pre-production sample approval
- Color tolerance, if required
- Adhesion and wear requirements
- Nickel-release or RSL testing requirements
- Packaging that prevents scratching during transport
These specifications are especially important when different components—such as chains, clasps, pendants and earrings—must match even though they may be produced by different workshops.
Final thoughts
The problem in this case was not simply that the coating was too thin or that the buyer selected the wrong gold shade. The main issue was that “0.5-micron PVD gold” and “18K gold color” did not form a complete, measurable production standard.
For custom stainless steel jewelry, the safer approach is to combine a physical master sample with clearly defined coating, color and inspection requirements. This gives the designer, jewelry manufacturer and plating factory the same reference before mass production begins.
